First a description of the foreground, there are six women like forms laying as if they are sun bathing with their blur sleek in the wind or just lying in the sand beneath them represented by brown dots. The women are layered in quintuple colors start inner to outer, black, charcoal gray, light gray, white, and brown representing skin tone.Cropped arms and legs with only the belly and breast having only been represented distinctly. The heads of the women are circles with throwaway shapes within. the inner shapes of the head give the feeling of an eye although one is not truly represented, there is the feeling of someone looking out at you. The hair on the women is solid black with a with stripe along the top of the shape, this perhaps show a flowing motion in the knead or small light source.Moving into the mid ground of the piece, there are nine pyramids, three s ided with each panel a different color starting right to left a white, gray, and black were used for coloration. The white and the gray panels on the pyramids have brown ink spattered along in a erratic pattern representing wind blown sand. Which causes a belief that the women and the pyramids are working against each other in that, they flow in different directions.The play down shows water supply flowing, but does not seem to be flowing in same direction as the sand on the pyramids, but it is flowing with womans hair.The water is green with black and white lines showing motion. The Lines in the water capture the feeling of the womens hair as she sunbathes at the oceanside.Gordy seems to have a great sentiency of balance, everything seems to be flowing evenly and forcefully throughout all of his works not just the one I chose. There is dominance present in the piece there are six women that are particularly the same in size, color content, space, and attitude. Nine pyramids tha t are exactly the same forming unity in the piece. An easy feeling of rhythm , there is not a much for action or excitement presented in this particular work. I feel this work is based on form and spacial continuity. Every form is evenly placed and calculated precisely. The work is evenly proportioned, every shape is measured to the exact of the next.

Volunteering for a Food DriveIm hungry. Lets get some(a)thing to eat before we go. It was around ten oclock on a Saturday morning. Normally my parents might find me in bed or playing on the computer at this time, but I was dressed and grasping the doorhandle in our kitchen on this particular morning. I felt a slight wave of hunger flow through my body, so I suggested to my catch that we baffle a light mid-morning snack to tide us over before lunch. I searched through a cupboard and found some crackers to sequestrate with us. It was going to be a hard day, and although I knew the people at the church would probably bring snacks and refreshments for us, I wanted to be sure that I had a full stomach on which to work. I wouldnt realize the true meaning of hunger, however, until my day of work on the postal workers nutrition drive was done. My mother helped by at various times throughout the year at volunteer events in the community. When I was born, she passed a few of her traits to me, and I, too, became interested in volunteering. I spent a day each summer going down to my grandmothers church and helping out with a summer fair by selling items and collecting money for the church. As Mom started to talk about the postal workers food drive for the local food cupboard, I was anxious to help out in my own community. The idea fascinated me, helping out my neighbors by collecting and dispersing food to where it was needed. I knew Id feel just like Robin spunktaking from the rich and giving to the poor. In this case, though, all of the process was voluntary. My impression of hunger and starvation was limited in the past to the memorable television commercials for UNICEF and the childrens silver around the world. I never realized that hunger might occur closer to home. I certainly never thought that anyone within my neighborhood or my town would be hungry. Mom drove us to where the food cupboard was located, at the Congregational church. As I entered in to the la rge meeting get on downstairs at the church, I was met by around eight smiling residents of our town. A few of them were older ladies a couple of them were middle-aged men. I would practice to know them better as my visit elapsed at the church. I was unsure and a bit nervous at first. I hadnt visited the church since my dewy-eyed grades during which I participated in a weeklong summer Bible school. I... ...t to help out my neighbors. But a part of me still housed despair. Most of this food would be used by the next food drive in about six months. I could only compare it to when I was a child, seeing an ambulance commission by my house I wasnt sure whether to think that someone was hurt or that someone was helping. Now I wasnt sure if I should think of the pathetic person or the people who helped by donating food. My hope was that the people needing help would find it partially because of my assistance. But I knew there would be some that, for some reason or another, declined t o have the assistance. They were still suffering. By the end of the day, my view of hunger had completely changed. After my help, I sometimes wondered about the people who genuinely needed food whenever I was grabbing a bite to eat. I sometimes worried about the people who were too afraid or too noble to seek help. And I sometimes thought about the time when I was the driver of the ambulance. From then on, I searched through the cupboards to find extra cans that we could donate during the food drives. And when it was ten in the morning and I needed something to eat, I reconsidered how hungry I really felt.

Published in 1939, The Grapes of Wrath tells the story of the fictional Joad family, who later losing their Oklahoma farm due to economic hardship and the Dust Bowl, embark on a trek westward to California, hoping to find work and economic stability, but only find stretchd hardship and despair.After losing twain family members to death, characters Granma and Granpa Joad, and two more family members, Noah the oldest Joad son and Connie the pregnant Rose of Sharons husband, decide to leave the family the rest of the family, however discouraged, continue on their voyage to California. After their arrival in California, the Joads endure exerciseation by the indicantful upper crust employers, horrible living conditions, as we ll as police brutality.In response to the migrant laborers lack of power and rights, as well as their absurdly low wages, the laborers, including the preacher Jim Casey, unionize in order to manage back against the exploitation of their corrupt employers. Through his depiction of the unionization of exploited workers, Steinbeck advocates for workers unions and the need for collective action among the masses. Furthermore, by emphasizing the exploitation of the lower classes, as well as the human suffering caused by the powerful and corrupt upper-class employers, Steinbecks firm stance against the power of big-business is lucid (Hendrick).Steinbecks further asserts his political ideas by depicting the Joads as having an extended concept of family. Throughout the novel, various instances arise in which the concept of family extends beyond the traditional conjugal unit, to include members related by plight as well as by blood (Hinton). This is first evidenced in the opening chapters of the novel, as the Joads prepare to embark on their journey westward, they allow the preacher Jim Casey to join them on their journey to California, accepting them as one of their own.Ma Joads attempt to help starving children in the migrant camp, even as her own children do not have complete to eat further depicts the Joads extended concept of family as well as the altruism displayed by the Joad family. It is this wing of the traditional familial structure that conveys Steinbecks Socialist viewpoints and his emphasis on the altruism and goodness of the Joads that seem to convey the message that during times of immense suffering and social upheaval people must come together to help one another.Perhaps however, the most notable depiction of the altruism and goodwill of the Joad family occurs at the end of the novel by none other than Rose of Sharon, the Joad familys eldest daughter, a character up until this point plays a relatively secondary role in the novel. After the Joad famil y suffers yet another tragedy, when Rose of Sharon gives birth to a stillborn baby, the family, devastated by their loss come across a dying elderly stranger.In an act of extreme kindness, Rose of Sharon offers her breast milk to the man in order to save his life. Moreover, Steinbeck emphasis the humanity and forbearance of the Joads in order to provide a stark contrast to the cold and unfeeling upper-class employers that exploit the migrant workers in order to both invoke sympathy in the reader for the plight of the workers as well as to further argue against big-business (Hinton). Finally, The Grapes of Wrath, as a renowned work of literature, fosters a paramount image of the Southern farmer.For those with even the vaguest knowledge of this important historical era, the Great Depression conjures up images of impoverished farmers, driven from their homes, stoic-faced and desperate, in search of better opportunities and a future for themselves and their families. Although The Grap es of Wrath provides a fictional look of one sharecropping family, and while it can be argued that Steinbeck creates a rather dramatized depiction of the sharecroppers, the story Steinbeck tells was one that was aline for many.The Great Depression did indeed drive thousands of sharecroppers from their lands, many of which may have been subjected to some of the same horrors the Joads endured. In conclusion, The Grapes of Wrath is valuable for its image of Southern farmers that has become the poster image for the Great Depression, and still remains as such even today. In stark contrast to both Agees Let Us Now Praise Famous Men and Steinbecks The Grapes of Wrath, is Elskine Caldwells Tobacco Road.While both Let Us Now Praise Famous Men and The Grapes of Wrath work actively to maintain the dignity of its subjects, Tobacco Road instead provides a much more negative image of the novels characters. Caldwells fictional Lester family like the focus of both Let Us Now Praise Famous Men an d The Grapes of Wrath are a family of Southern farmers enduring the pictorial suffering wrought by hunger and extreme poverty in the midst of the Great Depression.Whereas Agee presents a dignified image of his subjects, and Steinbeck emphasis the altruism and goodness of the Joad family despite their conditions, Caldwell seems to reduce his characters to less than human. Driven by base instincts the Lester family seem to epitomize vulgarity, violence, obscenity and general indecency. It is in this way that Caldwell depicts the darker side of poverty.
